A free ISBN barcode generator for your book cover

Preparing a back cover brings several small decisions together: which number belongs to this edition, whether a retailer expects a price extension, and which artwork file suits your layout. This ISBN barcode generator keeps those decisions visible. Enter your assigned ISBN, choose an optional price add-on, inspect the preview, and download the format you need. You can change a choice and immediately see the result before saving another file.

Start by comparing the entered number with your publishing records. A mathematical check can catch typing mistakes, but it cannot confirm that a number was assigned to your book. Treat the preview as a production aid alongside your title information and printer’s requirements. For the rest of your cover setup, use our book spine width calculator and read why a book cover is more than a pretty picture.

ISBN-10 to ISBN-13: the same edition, a different check digit

The International ISBN Agency explains that ISBNs changed from ten digits to thirteen in January 2007. An ISBN-13 contains a prefix, registration group, registrant, publication element and final check digit. The prefix is currently 978 or 979. The lengths of the middle elements vary, which is why inserting hyphens at fixed positions does not reliably produce a correctly grouped ISBN. See the Agency’s explanation of what an ISBN identifies.

To convert an older ISBN-10 for barcode use, the old check digit is removed, 978 is placed before the remaining number, and a new check digit is calculated. GS1 describes this conversion. This tool performs it when you enter a valid ISBN-10. A 979 ISBN has no ISBN-10 equivalent; the result states that clearly instead of inventing a shorter number.

Use the ISBN check digit calculator before downloading

Spaces and ordinary hyphens are accepted, so you can paste a number from your records. An ISBN-10 may end in X. If the check digit is wrong, the message gives the mathematically correct number; it does not silently replace your entry. Compare that suggestion with your original record before editing. If the length or characters are wrong, correct the entry first. The tool clears the previous barcode whenever the new input cannot be used.

Hyphenation uses a dated local range file derived from the International ISBN Agency range message. That file describes registration groups and publisher ranges. When a range is unavailable, the result preserves the digits without guessing hyphens and explains the limitation. A valid check digit and recognised range still do not prove that the ISBN belongs to this edition or publisher.

EAN-5 price barcode: choose it for your distribution plan

The optional five-digit symbol sits beside the main EAN-13 barcode. You can omit it entirely or select No price to generate 90000. This tool also offers the requested currency conventions for US, Canadian, British, Australian and New Zealand prices. Ask your distributor which convention it accepts, especially outside the US. Selecting a currency here does not convert the amount: enter the intended cover price in that currency.

US amounts from 0.01 to 99.98 use the leading digit 5 and four price digits. The value 59999 represents a price above US$99.98 without encoding the exact amount, so US$99.99 cannot be represented as an exact price. This generator uses that high-price value for US amounts of 100 or more. Current BISG guidance also describes an expanded exact-price convention through US$499.99; check your trading partner’s needs before choosing a high-price code. Other currencies here are limited to 99.99.

Download a barcode for book cover artwork at the intended size

PDF and SVG preserve the bars as vector shapes. Choose PDF for a layout workflow that places PDFs, or SVG when your application supports it. The PNG export is rendered at 1200 ppi at the stated physical size. Keep its proportions when placing it. Stretching only the width or height changes the barcode geometry, and a sharp on-screen preview alone cannot establish the quality of a printed copy.

Choose an exact white field: KDP 2.00 × 1.20 in (50.8 × 30.5 mm), IngramSpark 1.75 × 1.00 in (44.5 × 25.4 mm), or your own dimensions. The downloaded PDF, SVG and PNG use that field size, with the barcode centred inside it. IngramSpark recommends a 1.75 × 1 in barcode area. Keep the field at its exported dimensions in your cover layout.

The complete barcode, including its quiet zones and digits, uses the largest uniform scale that fits, within the GS1 range of 80–200%. GS1 specifies a nominal module width of 0.330 mm and a minimum of 0.264 mm at 80%. If your custom field is too small, the tool gives the minimum dimensions. See GS1 EAN-13 dimensions. The scale percentage is shown for reference; do not stretch the symbol or trim its white margins.

All three formats have a white background behind black bars. Preserve that field and compare a printed proof with your printer’s requirements. For other cover images, our image resolution checker for print helps assess their size. You can return to Book Design Tools at any stage.

Prepare the barcode as part of your cover workflow

Use the ISBN barcode generator once the edition’s publishing details are settled. Keep the assigned number with the title, format and imprint in your production notes. Copy it from that record rather than from a low-resolution cover image. After entering it, compare the displayed digits with the record before choosing the artwork size. A correct check digit is a useful consistency check, but a different valid number could still belong to another book. The generator cannot establish ownership or assign a new ISBN.

Price is a separate decision. Leave No price add-on selected when you only need the ISBN symbol. Choose No price (90000) when the distributor asks for that extension. Select a currency and enter the cover price when a price extension belongs in your distribution plan. The price barcode EAN-5 is additional data beside the main symbol; it does not replace the ISBN. Changing it changes the downloaded artwork, so make sure the cover designer receives the version you actually intend to print.

The preview places a currency price on the same top line as the ISBN. For example, entering 24.95 with US dollars shows US $24.95; Canadian dollars shows CAD $24.95. This human-readable line makes the selected price easier to check during proofing. Compare it with any separate price printed elsewhere on the cover. If the two disagree, resolve the publishing decision before exporting again. A mathematically valid add-on does not make a conflicting printed price correct.

Choose the field that matches your printer’s cover setup. The field includes the symbol and the surrounding white space needed to keep the bars separate from the artwork. Place the downloaded file at its stated physical size. Avoid stretching it to fill a convenient gap, adding a texture behind the bars or clipping the white field during placement. The preview is scaled for the screen; the dimensions shown beside it describe the print field. Your layout application should preserve that aspect ratio when you place the file.

PDF and SVG keep the bars as vector shapes. PNG is available at 1200 dpi for a workflow that needs a raster file. Choose the format your designer or printer can use reliably, and inspect the exported cover rather than relying only on this page’s preview. Check that the barcode remains crisp, that the digits are readable and that the entire field is present. When handing over the file, include the ISBN, chosen extension and field dimensions so another person can compare the artwork with the production record.

Keep revisions clear. If you change a price or discover a typing error, regenerate the barcode, replace the old artwork in the cover document and inspect the resulting PDF. Do not leave several almost identical barcode files beside the final cover without marking which one is current. The same discipline helps when preparing paperback and hardcover editions: use the correct assigned ISBN for each product form and verify it again at proof stage. An accurate barcode file is only useful when the right file reaches the right edition.

For a coordinated cover, calculate its panel and spine measurements with the book spine width calculator before placing the barcode. Check cover photographs with the image resolution checker, then read the practical role of a book cover. These steps bring identification, geometry and image preparation together without treating one successful check as approval of the entire book.

ISBN barcode questions

Do I need to buy a barcode for my ISBN?

No. A barcode only encodes the ISBN you already have, so you can generate it here for free. Some ISBN agencies sell barcode graphics separately; a purchased graphic encodes the same number. In Canada, eligible publishers receive ISBNs free from Library and Archives Canada, but the agency does not provide barcodes.

Does this free ISBN barcode generator give me an ISBN?

No. It makes barcode artwork from a number you already have. Eligible Canadian publishers can request free ISBNs through Library and Archives Canada; French-only publishers are directed to BAnQ. In the United States, Bowker is the official ISBN agency. Follow the appropriate agency’s application and assignment process before producing cover artwork.

Can I use one ISBN for paperback and hardcover?

Each format and edition needs its own ISBN, as Library and Archives Canada explains. Select the number assigned to the particular edition you are preparing. Keep separate barcode exports with the corresponding cover files so a later revision does not accidentally place the paperback number on a hardcover.

Will KDP add a barcode for me?

Yes. KDP’s title setup instructions say it places a barcode automatically when the cover file does not contain one. Supplying your own is a choice within your cover workflow. Keep the intended area clear and inspect the cover in Print Previewer before approving it.

Does an IngramSpark cover template include a barcode?

IngramSpark’s File Creation Guide describes the barcode on its generated template. It permits moving that barcode to suit the design and says not to resize it. Use the template and instructions for your specific book, rather than assuming every printer uses the same placement.

Do I need to regenerate the barcode when the price changes?

If the add-on encodes the previous price, create artwork with the new price information and review the printed cover price too. The ISBN itself does not change just because the price changes. If you chose No price or omitted the add-on, discuss your distribution requirements before deciding what artwork to supply.

Which downloaded file should I send to my designer?

Ask which format works in the cover layout. PDF is a useful starting point because its bars remain vector shapes; SVG offers the same advantage in compatible applications. Include the ISBN, intended physical size and add-on choice with the artwork. Before printing, compare the final cover’s number with your publishing record and check a physical proof.

How do I convert ISBN-10 to ISBN-13?

Enter the valid ISBN-10. The generator removes its check digit, prefixes the remaining nine digits with 978 and calculates the ISBN-13 check digit. Review the converted digits against your publishing record before downloading the barcode.

Do I need a barcode for KDP?

You may provide your own barcode, or KDP can add one to your print cover. Keep the required area clear in either workflow. Choose the approach that matches your printer’s current instructions and inspect the final cover preview.
